Is Freemasonry derived from Templars?

I don't believe that Freemasonry is as important as they think they are. At best it would seem they are a distraction or a ruse. Perhaps even a source of foot soldiers for the the Knights.

 

Although it has to be recognized that a significant number of current and historic USA senators (including Presidents) have Freemasonry ties. Certain lodges have a step or degree called Knight Templar such as Royal Arch Lodge (now St. Andrew's Royal Arch Chapter).
